The Mighty Undo Button

When I was an IT lecturer I was always surprised at how nervous my students were of “losing everything” by hitting the wrong key.

I gradually introduced the Undo button earlier and earlier in the course until now it is in the very first lecture for all my beginners.  At the end I say dramatically “If you forget everything I have said except one thing I would want that one thing to be the Undo button”.

I tell them to type their name and then play with the Formatting toolbar to make their name as outrageous as possible.

It is a pleasure to see the looks of delight as they repeatedly click the Undo button until they have a blank page.  Even more so when they click the Redo until their wild formatting is back again.

The Undo button gives you confidence to experiment.  It takes away the fear of drastic mistakes.  Best of all it gives you the chance to practise new skills by repeating them quickly and often.
